China filed the most GenAI patents
According to the latest report from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a total of 54,000 GenAI patents were filed worldwide between 2014 and 2023 – and more than 25% of these in the last year.

China is far ahead of other countries in the development of generative AI in terms of volume: the country filed 38,000 patents in this domain between 2014 and 2023, six times more than the 6,300 patents filed by its nearest rival, the United States. Other key research locations for GenAI in Asia include the South Korea, Japan and India, which also rank in the global top 5. In Europe the United Kingdom leads the way (6th globally) with 714 patents published in the same period. //
