China lifts ban on Argentine poultry imports
China has lifted a ban on poultry imports from Argentina, which it had imposed in March 2023 following the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a shipment of Argentine poultry.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Argentina was China’s third-largest supplier of poultry before the ban. The Chinese decision is particularly significant in light of the deepening trade conflict with the United States, in which Beijing has imposed a 15 percent tariff on poultry products from the United States. The tariff measure is part of a broader package of measures that covers about $21 billion worth of American agricultural and food products. The United States was China’s third-largest meat supplier last year, after Brazil and Argentina, with a total export of about 590,000 tons, accounting for 9 percent of China’s total meat imports.
