China lifts ban on Argentine poultry imports
China has lifted its ban on poultry imports from Argentina, which it had imposed in March 2023 following the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a shipment of Argentine poultry.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Argentina was China’s third-largest supplier of poultry before the ban.
China’s decision is particularly significant in light of the deepening trade conflict with the United States, in which Beijing has imposed a 15 percent tariff on poultry products from the United States.
The tariff measure is part of a broader package of measures that covers about $21 billion worth of U.S. agricultural and food products.
The United States was China’s third-largest meat supplier last year, after Brazil and Argentina, with a total export of about 590,000 tons, accounting for 9 percent of China’s total meat imports.
