China would stimulate domestic consumption with tax refund relief
China has taken another step to boost weak domestic demand by lowering the threshold for tax refunds for foreign tourists, the Ministry of Commerce and other government agencies announced in a joint statement on Sunday.
The changes are aimed at encouraging inbound tourism-related consumption by expanding the number of shops eligible for tax refunds in shopping districts, tourist attractions, airports and hotels. The most important change is that the refund threshold will now be increased from 500 yuan to 200 yuan for purchases made on the same day at the same store.
The measure is part of a broader package of measures to stimulate China’s economy, which aims to boost domestic consumption in response to recent weak demand.
