China would increase its grain production capacity by 50 million tons

China is planning a significant capacity expansion in grain production: according to the announcement of the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country’s production potential would be increased by about 50 million tons, primarily by ramping up the cultivation of corn and soybeans – reported the Agrarszektor following the Global Times.

The measure aims to modernize Chinese agriculture and rural areas, while serving to strengthen food supply security. The NDRC emphasized that the program focuses on strengthening production capacities, improving efficiency and quality, and ensuring a stable supply of basic agricultural products.

In addition to increasing corn and soybean production, the plans also include expanding the cultivation of high-quality fodder crops, such as silage corn and alfalfa, as well as developing special and high-value-added crop varieties, wrote UkrAgroConsult.

An important element of the strategy is the strict protection of arable land and the optimization of land use. To this end, China would improve the coordination and compensation mechanisms that support the efficient use of agricultural land.

The NDRC highlighted that the demand for feed grains is constantly increasing, mainly based on corn and soybeans. However, domestic production of the latter still does not cover the needs, so China relies on imports to a significant extent. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2025, China’s corn production was 301.2 million tons, while soybean production was 23.9 million tons.
