KIM: innovation must be protected in the markets with industrial property rights
The protection of industrial rights is also important because innovations must not only be created for the sake of the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy, but they must also be protected on the markets – emphasized László Bódis, the Deputy Secretary of State responsible for innovation at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation (KIM), on Tuesday at the National Office of Intellectual Property at the presentation of his new publication, Value from Idea, in Budapest.
He recalled: the government set the goal in the János Neumann Program that by 2030, Hungary would be among the top 10 European and the top 25 countries in the world in terms of innovation. Hungary was ranked 21st in Europe and 34th in the world in 2022 based on various innovation indices.
According to the deputy state secretary, in order to catch up, significant progress must be made in three areas in the Hungarian innovation ecosystem. One area is to increase the supply of researchers and developers: currently in Hungary there are about 6,200 development engineers per 1 million Hungarian inhabitants, and I would like to increase this to 9,000 by the end of the decade.
The other area is to increase the proportion of innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in Hungary this indicator is currently 32.7 percent compared to the EU average of 52 percent. The third area is the increase of industrial rights protection activity. Hungary receives 1.5 patents per billion euros of GDP, the EU average is 3.5 patents. According to László Bódis, Hungary ranks 12th among the EU member states with this indicator.
