The European Union’s regulation on artificial intelligence has been announced
Today, the EU Regulation on Artificial Intelligence (“AI Regulation”) was announced, the world’s first truly comprehensive, sector-neutral piece of legislation related to artificial intelligence (“AI”). The new legislation covers all the “life cycles” of artificial intelligence, starting from the development of the AI system to its user use.
The MI Regulation enters into force 20 days after its announcement, but the companies concerned are only required to apply the rules contained therein.
The most important deadlines related to the MI Regulation are as follows:
August 1, 2024: Entry into force of the MI Regulation.
February 2, 2025: General provisions and rules on “prohibited AI practices”, such as a clear ban on the use of emotion recognition systems that exploit vulnerable groups and in workplaces and educational institutions, become applicable.
August 2, 2025: Many rules, including general purpose AI models and competent authorities, become applicable.
August 2, 2026: Most of the additional provisions of the MI Regulation, including, for example, its III. obligations relating to high-risk AI systems listed in its Annex.
2 August 2027: The AI Regulation becomes fully applicable, including all obligations for high-risk AI systems.
“Given that the MI Regulation imposes a number of obligations on the affected organizations, they should start preparing in time to comply with the new rules”
– emphasized dr. Csaba Vári and dr. András Gaál, expert lawyers of the Baker McKenzie Law Office.
