This year 253 entries from 25 countries entered the international contest. A jury of 49 international experts selected the 137 best designs worthy of an award and awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in 8 different categories.
Medal winners from three continents
The three medal winners at this year’s WorldStar Student Awards came from three different continents.
Gold medal: Alpha Biopac, a strong box made from water hyacinth designed by a team from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana for packaging and transporting smoked fish.
Silver medal: Jeremy Marchant from the University of New South Wales in Australia won the silver with his takeaway sushi paper box. It is made from renewable mono-material, it is stackable, has a lid and a separate chopstick holder.
Bronze medal: the team from California Polytechnic State University designed a sunscreen product packaging called Sun Ease, which utilises innovative carton-in-carton technology to eliminate the plastic packaging of traditional sunscreen products.
Students from the University of Sopron won gold and silver medals
Eleven design and graphic design students from the University of Sopron’s Faculty of Wood Engineering and Creative Industries were among the finalists, who prepared for the competition with the help of art teachers Péter Rosta and Judit Gabriella Szarka.
Adrienn Barbara Varga won a gold medal in the “Other Packaging” category, while Kíra Fanni Sztaskó came home with a silver medal in the “Marketing Appeal” category.
Péter Rosta:
“These concepts aren’t primarily created with the aim of market promotion, but rather as a creative challenge in a competition. It is special that our students always present their concepts in the form of a tangible, scaled model”.
Gold medal in the “Other Packaging” category: Barbara Adrienn Varga – “Tree seedling in seed paper” packaging
“My plan was to create environmentally friendly, waste-free packaging. I wrapped the tree seedling in seed paper that holds moisture in the plant, which can grow into a plant once it enters the ground”, told Barbara Adrienn Varga.
Silver medal in the “Marketing Appeal” category: Kíra Fanni Sztaskó – “Tortilla chips” packaging
“My goal was to wrap the product in paper instead of a plain plastic bag. The initial geometric shape slowly evolved into a prism in the shape of a rhombus, which can be opened from the side with a string”, said Kíra Fanni Sztaskó. //
