An outstanding ecotourism investment is starting at Lake Nagyszéksós with 1.4 billion forints of EU support, the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) announced to MTI on Wednesday.

András Rácz, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, emphasized at the project opening event held at the Mórahalom Mayor’s Office on Wednesday that the development is exemplary, as it creates new jobs, contributes to sustainable economic growth, and provides a model for how to harmonize the interests of nature conservation, tourism, and local communities, the announcement said.

The project is being implemented in a consortium between the Kiskunság National Park Directorate and the Mórahalom Municipal Government. Thanks to the development, an 800 square meter, modern stork shelter and visitor center will be established on the outskirts of Mórahalom, where interactive exhibitions, nature films, community spaces, a herb garden, and a playground will await visitors. As part of the investment, five new lookouts – the Nádirigó, Levelibéka, Bölömbika, Bivalyos teraszos and the Ökölógiai lookout – will also be built, from which an unparalleled panorama of the saline lakes and the surrounding wildlife will open, and the Ökölógiai lookout will also be accessible by boat.

Educational trails are being prepared for hikers and families, including an interactive, water spider-themed educational trail, and a playground, where even the youngest can playfully get to know the wildlife of Kiskunság – they wrote.

They added that as part of the development, the existing animal enclosure and its surroundings will be transformed into a viewing enclosure, so that visitors can observe the iconic animals of the region up close. The energy modernization and gardening of the Nagyszéksós-tó accommodations will also be carried out so that guests can relax in the most comfortable environment possible. The development will also include thematic tours, nature conservation programs, photography tours, and community events.
