K&H: starting school may cost more than ever
Inflation also affects the start of school, parents have to expect higher expenses than before. Nationally, more than 17 percent of the expenses related to the opening of schools are related to notebooks, paper products, and drawing sheets, which are essential for learning, and these products may be up to 40-50 percent more expensive this year, and the price of non-paper office supplies may increase by 30 percent. Based on official data, K&H looked at how the official national average price of products popular among children changed: for example, hamburgers saw a 35 percent price increase, while the price of a backpack went up by 17 percent.
While there is already a significant price increase in almost every area on a daily basis, the start of the school year in August means an additional expense for parents – it is clear from the compilation of K&H, which also shows how the prices of products that are popular among children and necessary for the start of school have changed.
According to official data, between August and October 2020, gym equipment, clothes, and shoes accounted for nearly 37 percent of the expenses necessary for the start of the school year, while notebooks, drawing sheets, and stationery, which are essential for learning, represented more than 17 percent. For the latter, a massive price increase of 40-50 percent is expected, according to the forecasts, and for non-paper office supplies, the price increase can be up to 30 percent. According to official KSH data, clothing items were less expensive compared to the main inflation indicator, but still nearly 5 percent more expensive in July than a year earlier.
