For years, K&H has been tracking the development of children’s inflation with a mini-basket, i.e. how the prices of products that are popular or important to children change. The total price of the six items in the basket – fruit yoghurt, cocoa snail, liter orange juice, hamburger, backpack and spectacle frames – amounted to 44,671 forints in October this year, compared to 42,159 forints a year earlier. Of the individual products, fruit yoghurt has the most favourable result for children, as the price of the product has decreased, which may be due to the fact that it is a product with a margin stop.

For years, K&H has been tracking the development of children’s inflation: namely how the prices of products that are popular with children change. The six items in the basket – fruit yoghurt, cocoa snail, liter orange juice, hamburger, backpack and spectacle frames – clearly show how the price change affects students’ pocket money and everyday decisions. According to the Central Statistical Office, the value of the basket in October this year amounted to 44,671 forints, while a year earlier it was 42,159 forints.

What, how much?

For children, the development of the price of fruit yoghurt is most welcome. It fell from 217 forints in 2023 to 200 forints last year, and this year it could be purchased for 156 forints on average. The fact that fruit yoghurts are among the products with a high margin may play a role in the decrease.

Another stable player in the basket is cocoa snail, which is still known for its balanced pricing. While last year it cost 251 forints, this year the average price was 265 forints, meaning it remains one of the most predictable items among children’s favorites. This is also important because the cocoa snail is an almost iconic breakfast or snack for most schoolchildren.

The price of a liter of 100 percent orange juice in October this year was 1,130 forints, and that of a hamburger was 1,980 forints, compared to 1,030 and 1,760 forints a year earlier. Among the more durable products, the price of a backpack was 12,920 forints and that of a pair of glasses was 28,220 forints in October this year, while a year earlier they were listed in the statistics at 12,510 and 26,450 forints, respectively.

The development of child inflation is also particularly interesting because in many cases it is immediately reflected in children’s pocket money. If we look at fruit yogurt: two years ago, a monthly pocket money of 5,000 forints could hold about 23 pieces, last year about twenty-five, and this year already more than thirty, thanks to the fact that this is the only product whose price has decreased spectacularly.

Playful about finances

K&H is tracking child inflation because changes in everyday prices make it really clear that financial decisions affect children at a young age – which is why it is important for them to learn financial basics as early as possible.
The bank’s K&H Watch out, it’s ready, money! competition series moves tens of thousands of students every year, who learn in a playful way how financial decisions work, what saving means, and how inflation affects everyday life. This season – which can be applied for until January 26th – places particular emphasis on helping children recognize price changes in their own lives – whether through the price of a cocoa snail or an orange juice.
