K&H: the travel plans were upset by the lack of money
Travel options for Hungarians will be limited this year. The majority of the members of the 30-59 age group – 68 percent – do not plan a longer trip this year, 77 percent of them justified this with a lack of money. This represents a significant increase on an annual basis, as last year only 58 percent of those who gave up on longer trips were motivated by financial reasons, according to the K&H Commissioner for the Future survey. 46 percent of those surveyed would go on a domestic long weekend.
Hungarians’ travel plans have been hampered by the current economic environment, many do not plan longer trips due to a lack of money, according to the K&H Commissioner for the Future survey, which examined the travel plans of 30-59-year-olds this year in the first quarter of 2023. While in 2022 the people freed from the health quarantine enthusiastically started traveling again, in 2023 they had to withdraw from their travel plans again, whether it was a shorter or a longer trip.
According to the research, in the case of foreign trips, the travel intentions of the respondents fell to the level of 2021, and for domestic trips they even fall short of the 2021 level. Only 46 percent of them think that they can travel somewhere domestically on one of the long weekends; among those with lower incomes, their proportion is 38 percent, while among those with higher incomes it is 61 percent. Only 24 percent of them are preparing for a longer domestic trip – within this, 30 percent of those with a higher education, while only 22 percent of those with a lower education see the possibility of doing so.
According to the K&H survey, 19 percent of the respondents are thinking about short foreign tourist trips. Only 16 percent of those surveyed are planning a vacation abroad lasting longer than 5 nights, but even those in the best financial situation, i.e. those with a monthly income of over HUF 500,000, are planning to go on a trip beyond the national border.
