K&H: Middle-aged people perceive inflation to be much more severe than the actual data shows
The inflation perception of middle-aged Hungarians continues to far exceed the value in official statistics, according to the K&H Sure Future survey. According to the latest data, in May 2025, respondents expected an average annual inflation of 22 percent, while the official figure was only a fifth of this. The majority of the population expects significant price increases in the coming period as well.
Members of the Hungarian population aged 30-59 continue to perceive inflation much higher than the official figures show. Based on the results of the K&H Sure Future survey for the second quarter of 2025, respondents believe that the annual inflation rate could have been around 22 percent in May, while the official figure was only 4.4 percent. This difference between statistical data and opinions is practically the same as that experienced last year.
The median also starts with a two
According to the survey, the majority of respondents, about a third, indicated an inflation range of 15-24 percent, while 14 percent perceive inflation as over 40 percent. The median value was in the 20-24 percent range. Only 3 percent of those surveyed spoke of 1-4 percent inflation, despite the fact that this range is closest to the official data.
The differences in inflation perceptions – albeit small – are also evident in the demographic breakdown: those living in villages perceive an average inflation of 24 percent, while those with lower education and low and middle incomes also perceive an inflation rate of 23-24 percent. Those living in cities, those with degrees or higher incomes perceive a slightly lower, but still outstanding, price increase rate of 20 percent compared to last May.
