The series production of the new electric GLB has begun at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét. The Hungarian plant works together with the Rastatt plant in southern Germany in a flexible European MMA production network. The new GLB with EQ technology is the second fully electric Entry model (after the EQB) to be produced at the Kecskemét site – this will be followed later in the year by the 48 V hybrid GLB with a modern internal combustion engine. Both the fully electric and the high-tech hybrid versions of the model will be produced on the same production line, with flexible production organization.
As part of Mercedes-Benz’s business plan, the company has been investing around one billion euros in the Kecskemét site since 2022. The plant, which opened in 2012, currently employs nearly 4,500 people. Part of the investment was to make existing production lines more flexible and to carry out comprehensive digitalization. In addition to modern manufacturing technologies, artificial intelligence and increased automation play a key role. The design of the new production lines was designed and optimized using highly accurate digital simulation techniques, which resulted in significant savings in both construction time and costs. In addition, the series production of the new GLB is now also using the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which allows continuous updates of the vehicle software using the Mercedes Intelligent Cloud.
With all this, the Kecskemét plant is moving to the next level of production. Thanks to the artificial intelligence applications integrated into the Mercedes-Benz MO360 digital manufacturing ecosystem and the successful implementation of MB.OS, the plant operates extremely efficiently within the Mercedes-Benz global production network. Thanks to the virtual commissioning, the production halls were once again quickly and smoothly converted without having to interrupt existing production for an extended period of time.
