Apple season begins in Poland – limited supply, rising prices

The harvest of early summer apple varieties has begun in Poland, but market supply is currently scarce – writes FruitVeB. Although this scarcity is not reflected spectacularly in wholesale prices, after a weak start to the season, a continuous weekly price increase has been noticeable in recent days. According to the latest data, apple prices on Polish wholesale markets increased by 7% in a week, reaching the range of PLN 0.75–0.80/kg (70–75 HUF/kg) – writes Agrárszektor.

The current prices thus already exceed this season’s starting level of PLN 0.70–0.75/kg (65–70 HUF/kg), but are still below the levels of the record period in 2023. Last year at this time, summer apples appeared on the market at a price of around PLN 1.00/kg (HUF 93/kg), and by the end of July they had risen further to PLN 1.08/kg (HUF 101/kg). In comparison, this year’s price level represents a decline of around 31% on an annual basis, which is a noticeable difference for both producers and traders.

In comparison: two years ago, during the 2023 season, the July market was characterized by even lower prices of PLN 0.45–0.48/kg (HUF 42–45/kg), which was justified at that time by the possibility of a record harvest. This year, however, does not promise an outstanding yield, so the scarcity of supply and the increase in demand may generate a price increase in the coming weeks. The processing industry and fresh market suppliers are also closely monitoring developments.

The Polish market movements may also be of interest to Hungarian producers and wholesalers, as Poland is the largest apple producer in Europe and a significant exporter in the region. If the price increase remains persistent, it may also affect Hungarian market prices in the longer term, especially for summer and early autumn varieties.
