Fewer sheep, more expensive lamb
According to data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), Hungary’s sheep flock was 846.8 thousand on 1 December 2024, down 6.6% compared to December 2023.
The number of ewes decreased by 2.9% at 673.7 thousand. The volume of Hungary’s live lamb exports increased by 1% (to 10.5 thousand tonnes) and its value augmented by 15.7% (to HUF 21bn) in 2024 compared to the previous year. Hungary sold 11.6% fewer lambs in Italy, where 61% of our export goes. According to AKI PÁIR data, the average price of both light and heavy lamb in Hungary in the period of 1-12 weeks of 2025 increased by 16% compared to a year earlier, to HUF 2,246/kg and HUF 2,131/kg, respectively. According to the AKI PÁIR data, the average producer price of table wheat was HUF 84.2 thousand/tonne in the last week of March, excluding VAT and transport costs. This price was 30% higher than a year earlier. Feed wheat was available for HUF 82.8 thousand/tonne (+37%). //
