Livestock of turkey down, supply of beef shrinking
Trends in the world market of meat and poultry are monitored by Agricultural Research Institute (AKI). Data from the Market and Price Information (PÁÍR) system operated by KSH and AKI can be useful for making even short term business decisions. The livestock of turkey is down by 11 percent this compared to 2007, mainly as a result of high costs and prices. Domestic sales of turkey were down by 17 percent in the first nine months of 2008, compared to the same period in 2007. Average consumer prices dropped by 50 percent. The price of beef continued to rise in the world market in August. While prices continued to rise in the EU in September, they began to drop in the USA and Argentina. Livestock of cattle in the EU is still shrinking and import (mainly from Brazil) was also down by 40 percent in the first half of 2008.
