During the Easter period, egg consumption jumps by nearly a third, but it doesn’t matter where these products come from. Kifli.hu completely switched to selling so-called cage-free eggs years ago. The online supermarket joined the Una Terra Foundation’s Cage-Free Coalition program and set itself the goal of making sustainable and ethical choices available to as many customers as possible, even during Easter preparations.

In our country, nearly 8.1 million hens lay more than 2.3 – 2.4 billion eggs per year, supplying the processing industry, as well as restaurants, supermarkets and the catering industry. This includes the fact that around Easter, average egg consumption jumps by up to 30 percent. During this period, more and more customers pay attention to where the eggs used come from.

In 2020, Kifli.hu became the first retailer in the country to exclusively sell cage-free eggs. The online supermarket has now teamed up with the Una Terra Foundation to support the movement’s work within the framework of its Cage-Free Alliance program, promoting conscious shopping.

“As part of the cooperation, Kifli.hu will promote Cage-Free Alliance campaigns on its social media platforms, share educational content, and publish information on the online supermarket platform. The company will also launch a new subpage on Kifli.hu showcasing products from environmentally conscious and ethical livestock farming,”

– said Rita Szalma, Commercial Director of Kifli.hu.

Currently, nearly 80 percent of laying hens in Hungary still live in small cages where they can barely move around, and in some countries in Western Europe, the rate of cage farming has already dropped below 10 percent. Cage-free farming means that laying hens are kept in freer conditions, so they have more space and are raised in more natural living conditions. The Cage-Free Alliance aims for at least 80 percent of large food chains operating in Hungary to completely eliminate caged eggs from their offerings by 2026.
