Two insecticides receive emergency authorization against American grapevine cicada
The National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) has granted emergency authorization to NeemAzal-TS and Pyregard, so that more products are available to organic growers to protect against grapevine flavescence dorée (FD). The two products can be used in both organic and conventional viticulture against American grapevine cicada.

With the appearance of the grapevine flavescence dorée pathogen in the Somló wine region, the infection has already affected nearly 70% of the Hungarian wine regions. However, only a limited number of products that can be used in organic production against the American grapevine cicada (Scaphoideus titanus), which is responsible for spreading the phytoplasma, are available to farmers. In order to help with protection, Nébih has issued emergency authorizations for two insecticides that can also be used in organic production.
Pyregard
The insecticide Pyregard (40 g/l pyrethrin), which is not approved in Hungary, can be used in organic and conventional cultivation throughout Hungary from July 8, 2025 to October 31, 2025 by ground spraying. The product can be applied against the American grapevine cicada (based on plant testing) against larvae and adults a maximum of 2 times in a dose of 0.75 l/ha with a spray volume of 800-1000 l/ha. It is important to emphasize that the product cannot be used in the presence of bees visiting flowering weeds en masse! In the case of use in vineyards according to the regulations, the food and health withdrawal period is 7 days. The product or any other product containing the active ingredient pyrethrin can be used in the same area a maximum of two times during the entire vegetation period.
NeemAzal-T/S
NeemAzal-T/S (10 g/l azadirachtin) insecticide can be used in grapevines throughout Hungary by ground spraying from July 17, 2025 to November 13, 2025. The product can be applied against American grapevine cicadas in grapevines a maximum of 2 times at a dose of 3.0 l/ha, with a spray volume of 400-800 l/ha. In case of use in grapes according to the regulations, the food and health withdrawal period is 3 days.
