Fertilizer prices jumped by ~30% in two weeks, the market became unpredictable during spring work

Farmers were shocked in the middle of the spring sowing season: according to Pénzcentrum, the price of fertilizer increased by about 30% in two weeks, which, according to producers, brought unprecedented uncertainty. The article highlights that nutrient supply is particularly important during the period when plants are growing bushy, but due to the rapid movement of prices, many people are unable to plan ahead.

According to the report, the price per ton of the frequently used petisol is around 190 thousand forints, which means an increase of about 60 thousand forints in price in one week. The Money Center explains this by the increase in energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East: the price of natural gas, which plays a key role in fertilizer production, has doubled since the outbreak of tension, and transport risks are immediately appearing on international markets.

According to the article, the increase in prices may also spread to food prices in the medium term, especially if the conflict drags on: through grain-based feed, bread, milk, eggs, chicken, pork and beef may also be affected. Concerns are also growing in the EU: according to the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce, there could be a month-long disruption in store prices.

The report recalls: Minister of Agriculture István Nagy wrote a letter to the European Commission, in which he urged the reopening of Russian and Belarusian fertilizer imports, the suspension of customs tariffs and the abolition of punitive duties. In the coming weeks, the depth of the situation may be determined by how quickly the conflict is resolved and whether fertilizer and energy prices remain permanently high.
