Lidl could open in Romania in 2010
According to unconfirmed reports in the Romanian press, Schwarz-owned Lidl could open its first stores in the country in 2010, following completion of the retailer’s logistics centre in Chiajna, near Bucharest.
Lidl was initially supposed to start
operations in Romania sometime during 2006, however, the company
decided to delay expansions, apparently due to concerns about high
land prices. Reportedly, Schwarz will spend EUR150mn (US$198.5mn) on
opening as many as 100 stores by 2012. The company said that it had
the change of heart due to the potential of the Romanian market,
which it feels could allow for about 150 stores.
