Delays are expected for Shein and Temu orders due to new measures by US customs authorities
According to the latest reports, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has tightened inspections to curb the importation of illegal goods, which has a direct impact on online commerce giants Shein and Temu. These moves could delay the delivery of billions of dollars worth of cheap online orders from China.
The customs agents recently suspended by CBP were working as part of the expedited customs clearance program, which was designed to more quickly process shipments under $800. This program has significantly contributed to the smooth passage of large volumes of online orders through US ports. However, due to the restrictions, delays are now expected at all entry points.
CBP’s decision comes at a critical time when more than 1 billion packages are projected to arrive in the United States, most of them originating from China. The tighter controls were born out of political pressure, with the goal of protecting American businesses and curbing illegal drug imports.
As a result of the changes, SEKO Logistics of Illinois sued the US Court of International Trade, alleging that CBP did not provide them with adequate notice or a remedy. Some large logistics companies, such as UPS and DHL Express, are not affected by the suspension, but other operators will have to adapt to the new challenges.
