Calories in system of classification
According to the findings of several surveys, Hungarian consumers are becoming increasingly health conscious, as illustrated by the growing popularity of nutritional labelling systems and programs. Initiatives aimed at orienting consumers in their choice of foods have become successful in the EU. Guideline Daily Amount labels are an example, which show consumers what quantity of different nutrients is present in a given unit of the food and what the daily requirement is. These values are defined by CIAA (Confederation of Food and Drink Industries of EU). Recommended Daily Amounts are defined on the basis of EURODIET. The calculations have been based on a daily calorie requirement of 2000 for women and 2500 for men. INBÉ is a voluntary labelling system, but helps consumers in compiling their diet in amore deliberate way. The Update system of Norbert Schobert is targeted at both people fighting obesity and those suffering from diseases resulting from obesity. The number of people following this program was estimated at one million in 2006. One of the reasons for the popularity of this system is that nothing is absolutely prohibited, the program is not personalised (you don’t have to calculate different values for yourself) and that a number of manufacturers have joined it, who produce the foods which fit into the program. – At present, we are working with 25 manufacturers who make 130 Update products – say Norbert Schobert. These include large companies like SoleMizo, Cerbona, Univer, Sió-Eckes, Fonyódi Ásványvíz and smaller ones as well. In 2008, a franchise system of Update bakeries with 110 units was established. These offer 15 bakery products with a carbohydrate content reduced by 80 percent. The opening of a further 75 units is planned in 2009. In May, Update will also begin operating a medical centre intended to provide accurate information for both manufacturers and consumers. Applications have been submitted for certain Update products to be authorised to use the BIO certificate. In the retail sector, the SPAR- group is the main partner of the Update venture. Weight loss and weight control are both elements of the nutritional system developed by Alexandra Béres. The weight control index is one of the pillars of the program. This shows consumers what they can expect from eating different foods, but does not tell them how much they can eat. This is why maximum portions have been defined for people who want to maintain their weight and for those who want to lose weight. It is left to consumers to compile their diet in accordance with the rate of desired weight loss. Physical exercise is another key element of the program. It is not a primary objective for Súly-kontroll Kft. established by Alexandra Béres to promote sales of products with a favourable weigh control index. Instead, they focus on promoting the program itself. However, they are co-operating with an increasing number of retail partners and awareness of the program is also growing dynamically.
