Kaufland Launches Own-Brand Products Made With Cocoa-Free Chocolate
German retailer Kaufland has launched its first own-brand products made with a cocoa-free chocolate alternative, ChoViva.
The chocolate alternative, from start-up Planet A Foods, is produced by roasting sunflower seeds and combining them with vegetable fats and sugar, Kaufland noted.
The first Kaufland products featuring ChoViva include Waffle Bites and Neapolitans, available under the K-Classic brand.
Tobias Stricker, head of purchasing for confectionery and pastries at Kaufland, stated, “ChoViva’s chocolate alternative is a true revolution in the market and completely rethinks a traditional product. Cocoa cultivation is partly associated with ecological and social challenges.
“The solution of producing a chocolate alternative from domestic raw materials is therefore a real game-changer in many ways – one that we are very happy to use for our own-brand products.”
Sustainability Benefits
Kaufland highlighted that the use of sunflower seeds ensures sustainability benefits, as they can be produced in Europe.
The process will save 94% of water, compared to conventional cocoa bean cultivation, and cut CO2 emissions by approximately 80%, versus conventional chocolate, due to short delivery routes.
Kaufland seeks to offer good nutrition for everyone, now and in the future. This can be achieved by offering more sustainable and health-conscious alternatives, according to the company.
The retailer follows the guidelines of the Planetary Health Diet, published by scientists from the EAT-Lancet Commission.
These guidelines consider human health factors, as well as environmental factors related to products and their production.
With eating well the focus of Kaufland’s sustainability strategy, the company aims to pave the way for a more sustainable food supply for people, the climate, the environment, and animals.
