In recent years, we have been faced with extreme weather events and the damage caused by them more and more often. Between July 7 and 10, Generali Insurance received nearly 15,000 reports of damage to apartments and condominiums, which is an exceptionally high number. The majority of reports were related to sudden storms, followed by reports of damage caused by lightning and ice. According to Generali Insurance, the amount of damage payments is close to 3.5 billion forints.

The most damage reports came from Hajdú-Bihar; Pest; Csongrád and Békés counties, and according to the data, Debrecen, Szeged, Vecsés, Hódmezővásárhely, Hajdúszoboszló, Orosháza, Derecske and Pécs suffered the most from the storms in early July.

Sudden, significant summer storms in recent years

The last time an outstanding number of storm reports – 17,000 – were received by Generali Biztosító in August 2023. Before that, July was intense in terms of storms in 2015 and 2016, with 15,000 storm claims.

But 2010 was outstanding in terms of storms: according to the insurance company’s data, 3 years’ worth of storm damage occurred in the summer months (!), a total of 75 thousand storm damage reports were received by Generali Biztosító in May and June, and nearly 20 thousand reports related to natural and storm damage were received during August.

This year’s storms in July were extraordinary in that one and a half months’ worth of reports were received in the last few days, meaning that there had never been such a volume of damage reports in such a short period of time.
