From July 1, all watermelons with seeds come to Tesco from domestic producers
The overwhelming victory of the Hungarians is no longer a question, as far as Tesco’s melon range is concerned. The traditional watermelons with seeds available at the supermarket chain from July 1 only come to the stores from domestic sources. Tesco is preparing for the season with a total of more than 4,200 tons of Hungarian melons and cantaloupes.
In Hungary, we consume an average of 10-12 kilograms of melons per year. One of the Hungarians’ favorite summer fruits is gaining more and more popularity thanks to a more conscious and healthy diet and lifestyle. The most popular are the smaller, 4-6 kilogram and low-seeded varieties, as well as the dark-striped, 4-8 kilogram varieties.
About 4,000 tons of Hungarian watermelons go to the fruit and vegetable departments of domestic Tesco stores during the summer months. The first shipments of domestic melons have already arrived, and from the first day of July, only domestically grown seeded watermelons will arrive at Tesco’s logistics center. Those who like other flavors and shapes can also choose from seedless, mini, baby and yellow-fleshed melons. At the same time, it is good to know that melons are an excellent source of protein, as their seeds contain all the valuable essential amino acids, and they are also rich in iron, zinc, calcium and B vitamins. In order to exert its beneficial effects, it must be chewed thoroughly, so it is worth eating the melon with its seeds.
Cantaloupe consumption also shows an increasing trend and is currently around 1.5-2 kilograms per year. In our country, the Cantalup and Gália types are the most popular, and together with the honeydew melon, they are also available at Tesco during the summer, in a total amount of nearly 300 tons.
It is worth keeping an eye on Tesco’s discount catalog, as there are and will be melons available at discounted prices all the time. Czech and Slovak Tesco customers can also enjoy the taste of Hungarian melons, as the supermarket chain exports more than 3,400 tons of domestic watermelons to its stores in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
