We spend much less at Easter than at Christmas, but still 30% more than on a big shopping spree
Holiday seasons are usually always strong periods in retail, including Easter. Although we spend about 30% less than Christmas, we spend the same amount more than on an average large shopping trip. Auchan experts do not expect the margin limit to have a negative impact on demand, and in fact, they expect an increase in volume, since most of the 30-mark product categories are specifically Easter-specific.
Retailers have always believed that Easter predicts annual sales. Now, of course, there are extraordinary factors, such as the margin limit, which mainly affects products that we usually buy for Easter. This could increase consumption this year. In addition, the holiday falls on an ideal weekend, retailers consider the second and third weekends of the month to be the strongest, and this year Easter will be on the third Sunday of April, and Christmas spending is also relatively far away.
“Since fresh products are mostly served at Easter, our strongest period is the week before the holiday. Of course, we offer a wide range of other Easter products, such as home decorations, drinks, non-perishable foods, and sweets well in advance at the highlighted points of our stores, so that customers can easily find them. Auchan’s distinguishing feature is that we sell not only food and drinks, but also home decorations, textiles, tableware, toys, in short, all the accessories needed for the holiday. In total, we have nearly 1,000 types of Easter-related products for festive preparations and welcoming guests. We are waiting for customers with 130 types of ham and horseradish alone, 100 types of home decor, and 200 types of baking products,”
said Attila Nagy, Sales Director of Auchan Hungary.
This year, in addition to quality hams, there will also be budget-friendly solutions. We officially distinguish between quick-cured and traditional-aged products. The latter is cured in salt and smoked, so it can practically be served directly on the Easter table. In addition to classic Easter ham, this also includes products classified by consumers, such as ribs, knuckles, shoulder, ribs and turkey products. Auchan offers approximately 60 types of meat products from this category, with prices ranging from 1,690 forints to 5,990 forints per kilo. Although prices increase year by year due to the increase in purchasing costs, customers still buy classic ham 70-80% of the time, but in addition to ham, the turnover of sausages, crackers and bacon is also increasing.
