The mandatory deposit return system (DRS) went live in Hungary on July 1st, and it can already show serious results. Customers not only have a coupon that can be redeemed in stores or an amount that can be transferred to a bank account, but they can also offer the value of returned bottles and boxes to charity. According to Index, HUF 31 million has already been collected from such donations, which will be transferred to selected children’s hospitals at the end of the year.

Mohu, the subsidiary of Mol and the coordinator of the DRS system, announced that the amount raised will be donated to three priority children’s hospitals. The collected money will be transferred at the end of the year and will be used to purchase medical equipment for everyday treatment. The 2024 beneficiaries will be the Pál Heim National Institute of Medicine, the Bethesda Children’s Hospital, and the Semmelweis University Pediatric Clinic.

The Heim Pál National Institute of Medicine implements digital technical and medical technological developments from the amount offered. The Bethesda Children’s Hospital plans equipment purchases and infrastructure improvements for the various departments, while the Semmelweis University Pediatric Clinic acquires the medical equipment needed for everyday treatment.

The purpose of introducing the mandatory redemption system is not only to promote environmental protection, but also to provide society with an opportunity for charity. The HUF 31 million collected so far is already a significant contribution, and it can be expected to increase further in the future. Mohu drew attention to the fact that each HUF 50 offering for each returned bottle is recorded in a separate database, and the actual amount collected is published on their website at least every six months.
