This year’s strawberry crop prospects are good
According to KSH data, 5,000 to 5,500 tons of strawberries were harvested annually in Hungary in recent years. This season started earlier than usual, experts expected good harvest prospects.
According to KSH data, Hungary’s strawberry imports decreased by 33 percent to 2,775 tons in 2023 compared to the previous year, with almost half of the strawberries coming from Spain. A significant part of deliveries takes place before the Hungarian season, in April-May. A small proportion of the Hungarian strawberry crop is delivered to foreign markets, the fresh product was sent to the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia in the past year. Hungary’s strawberry exports decreased by 29 percent to 145 tons in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Until Hungarian strawberries entered the market, the imported product was sold at a wholesale price of HUF 2,224/kilogram between the 6th and the 14th. week. Imported strawberries are available alongside the Hungarian product, and their wholesale price (HUF 1,475/kilogram) is 15-21. on average, it was 13 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. This year, domestic strawberries entered the Budapest Great Market at a producer price of HUF 5,000/kilogram in the 11th week, and the producer price is from the 15th to the 21st. decreased by 18 percent (HUF 2,036/kilogram) compared to the average price of the same period last year.
