Good news: there will be no shortage of foie gras
Despite the ongoing bird flu epidemic, no shortage of domestic goose meat and fattened goose liver is expected this year, the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) told MTI on Tuesday.
The statement noted that according to a joint survey conducted with the Poultry Product Council, the sector’s players can serve both domestic and export markets.
As they wrote, as a result of the bird flu epidemic that started in the fall of last year and lasted until May, the fattened goose population decreased by 20 percent fell, while in the case of goose for meat consumption the decline was only 4 percent.
The majority of domestic goose meat and foie gras are sold to foreign markets, the annual per capita consumption in Hungary is one kilogram – they informed, adding that most roast goose is traditionally shipped to the German-speaking area by domestic processors.
However, in recent years, the share of Polish goose meat in the European market has gradually increased, which creates an increasingly strong competitive situation – they noted.
According to the information, the Hungarian foie gras export was given a great boost by the ban on the use of stuffing, so the demand for Hungarian kosher foie gras has also increased, and Hungary currently supplies the world’s Jewish communities with fattened foie gras – the NAK explained.
