Unmarked eggs found in a van on the M5 motorway
More than sixty thousand unmarked eggs were seized by the National Tax and Customs Office (NAV) on the Bács-Kiskun County section of the M5 motorway. When the van with a Slovak license plate was inspected, it was discovered that the vehicle was transporting twelve pallets, a total of more than sixty thousand eggs, for which the driver could not present either a transport document or a declaration in the Electronic Road Freight Traffic Control System (EKÁER).
The NAV notified the experts of the Bács-Kiskun County Government Office, who determined on site that the eggs were unmarked and therefore could not have been put into circulation. Food of unknown origin can pose social and food safety risks, so the authority ordered the destruction of the entire shipment.
The van was driving overweight, for which the NAV initiated administrative proceedings and imposed a fine of 260 thousand forints on the owner of the vehicle. Proceedings will also be initiated against the Hungarian consignor for failing to comply with the EKÁER notification obligation.
The case once again highlights the importance of strict compliance with food safety rules. Such irregularities not only endanger the health of consumers, but also the market position of properly operating food industry players. Close monitoring and rapid action by the authorities guarantee that such cases cause as little damage as possible to the economy and consumers.
