Onions have become significantly more expensive

According to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, the onion harvest in Hungary has ranged between 50 and 73 thousand tons in the last five years. In 2024, 25 percent more (72.9 thousand tons) of onions were produced than a year earlier. This year, onions were grown on 1.8 thousand hectares in Hungary, and according to experts, the average yield could be between 50–60 tons/hectare.

Hungary’s onion imports increased by 7 percent to 10.7 thousand tons in the first eight months of 2025 compared to a year earlier. The Netherlands supplied 28 percent (4.77 thousand tons), Slovakia 32 percent (1.98 thousand tons), and Germany 1 percent (457.78 tons) more onions to our country. At the same time, 44 percent (1.07 thousand tons) fewer onions arrived from Austria.

Hungary’s onion exports are not significant on an annual basis (1-2 thousand tons)

In the first eight months of this year, exports increased by 57 percent to 906.6 tons, the majority of which went to Romania and Austria. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of this year’s harvested free-range brown-skinned onions (276 forints/kilogram) at the Budapest Wholesale Market in the 23rd–40th week of 2025 exceeded the average price of the same period in 2024 by 39 percent. The price of smaller-sized onions increased by 45 percent to 283 forints/kilogram in the same period. Larger-sized onions appeared on the market in the 32nd week, and their producer price increased by 37 percent to 261 forints/kilogram in the 32nd–40th week of 2025 compared to a year earlier.
