Significant expansion in live cattle exports, decline in beef exports
According to the AKI’s slaughter statistics data, cattle slaughter in January-June 2024, expressed in live weight, was 11.5 percent below the amount in January-June 2023. Cows, which account for two-thirds of all slaughters, were slaughtered by around 13.6 percent, heifers by 19.8 percent, while bulls increased by 2.1 percent compared to a year earlier.
Based on data from the KSH, Hungary’s live cattle exports increased by 11.6 percent (30.9 thousand tons), and their value increased by 6.1 percent in January-May 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The main partners were Kosovo, Croatia, Albania, Poland and Italy. Hungary’s live cattle imports increased by 3.1 percent to 9.3 thousand tons and their value by 5.4 percent. More than half of the live cattle came from Denmark, Germany and Italy. The volume of beef exports decreased by 21.5 percent (3.3 thousand tons), and the value by 19.3 percent. The volume of beef imports increased by 10.8 percent (5.6 thousand tons) and the value by 6.4 percent in the observed period. According to the data of AKI PÁIR, the producer price of the young bull was HUF 867/kilogram of carcass warm weight on 1–31 January 2024. increased by 7.8 percent compared to the previous year. The price of the slaughter heifer increased by almost 17 percent, while the price of the slaughter cow did not change significantly during the examined period.
