The European Medicines Agency has published the first ESUAvet report for 2023, which examines both the sales and use of veterinary antimicrobials. The new system, which is now based on mandatory data reporting by Member States, provides a more accurate picture of the antibiotic situation. According to the report, Hungary has further improved in terms of antibiotics sold: it currently ranks only seventh among EU Member States, while the volume sold is almost the same as the EU average. The EMA is also providing online information to help interpret the data. Anyone interested can register for the event on June 3, but it may be particularly useful for practicing veterinarians.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) published the first ESUAvet report (European Sales and Use of Antimicrobials for Veterinary Medicine) on March 31, 2025. This new report replaces the previous ESVAC report, which was based on voluntary data provision by European countries and provided information only on the volume of veterinary antimicrobials marketed. In the new system introduced by the EMA from 2024, data provision is mandatory for Member States, and it now covers not only the volumes marketed, but also the use of the products The first edition of ESUAvet contains data for the year 2023. As a novelty, a new indicator per animal unit has also been introduced in the report: instead of the previously used mg/PCU, antibiotic use per animal unit will be calculated on the basis of mg/kg biomass. According to the 2023 distribution data, Hungary has moved back to seventh place in the ranking of countries marketing the most antibiotics, which is two places better than our previous position. According to the newly published data, the domestic value is almost the same as the EU average, which is also a positive development from the point of view of the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
