In January, GKI’s consumer confidence index rose to a two-year high
According to a survey conducted by the GKI Gazdaságkutató – with the support of the EU – in January, the public’s expectations improved significantly compared to December, so the consumer confidence index of the GKI rose to an almost two-year high. The population assessed both their financial situation in the last 12 months and their financial prospects for the next 12 months as strongly improving.
The GKI consumer confidence index – after the increase in December – increased at an accelerating rate in January, and this indicator rose to an almost two-year record high. In the three-decade history of surveys, there has never been such an improvement from one month to the next. The primary driving force behind the favorable change in the index is that the population assessed both the financial situation experienced in the last 12 months and the financial prospects for the next 12 months as having improved significantly compared to the previous month, and they also see the country’s economic situation in the next 12 months as much more favorable.
The perception of one’s own money that can be spent on high-value consumer goods also became much more favorable than in the previous month. The population’s inflation expectations rose somewhat, while the outlook for the expected development of the number of unemployed improved slightly compared to the last month of the year.
