Jack Ma is back at the forefront of Alibaba – AI development could boost the company
Jack Ma, the legendary founder of Alibaba, is once again actively involved in the company’s life. Although he does not hold an official position, sources say he has not been so directly involved in decision-making for five years. Alibaba’s new slogan – MAGA, Make Alibaba Great Again – is based on the development of artificial intelligence, in which Ma plays a key role, writes a recent article by economyx.
The Chinese star entrepreneur disappeared from the public eye at the end of 2020, after an antitrust investigation was launched against the company. His return is also politically significant: this year he strengthened his relationship with President Xi Jinping with a handshake, indicating that he once again enjoys the support of the government. This is especially important when China is trying to boost its economy by building on AI.
Under the leadership of Joe Tsai and Eddie Wu, Alibaba has allocated more than 380 billion yuan for AI and cloud-based developments over three years. The effects are already visible: Cloud revenue rose 26 percent in August, and the stock is up 88 percent so far this year.
Jack Ma’s moral authority and inspiring presence have given the company a new lease of life, especially as competitors like JD.com, Meituan, and Temu increasingly take over market share. Although he is not officially returning as CEO, employees say he is “back”—and his words are making a difference.
