Europe’s cheapest Christmas market is here now

The Christmas market in Sibiu, Transylvania, has now become one of the most popular Advent events in Europe, and in 2024, according to the British Eurochange survey, it was also awarded the title of the cheapest European Christmas market. The event, which was launched in the year the city was named European Capital of Culture in 2007, attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year to the historic Piata Mare Square, where a special blend of tradition and modern experiences awaits visitors – writes Pénzcentrum.

One of the biggest attractions of the fair is the impressive light show, which transforms the city’s old town into one of the brightest Advent centers in Europe. The festive atmosphere is further enhanced by numerous attractions: an ice rink, a Ferris wheel, a children’s amusement park and a carousel. A small train also takes tourists around the most beautiful parts of the city, while the Advent decorations and scents create a unique atmosphere.

The fair is open from 11:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 22:00 on weekends. Those who cannot visit in person can follow the events via webcam on the official website of the fair, the Târgul de Crăciun de la Sibiu platform.

According to the 2024 Eurochange survey, the Sibiu Christmas Fair stands out not only for its atmosphere but also for its prices. According to the data:

Accommodation costs: On average 8,700 HUF/person/night.

Food and drinks: A mug of mulled wine costs only 870 HUF.

Handicrafts: Prices are significantly lower than the European average.

This accessibility makes the fair particularly attractive to both locals and foreign tourists, who can enjoy the Christmas preparations in the historic city economically.

For the first time this year, the organizers are launching a Christmas bus service from Bucharest to Sibiu, which passes through the stunning scenery of the Olt Valley. The services will operate on the first two weekends of December, providing an even more convenient opportunity for those who would like to discover the most beautiful Advent market in Transylvania.
