This is where tourism comes in: these are the safest countries
This year, the Institute of Economics and Peace also published its global peace index, which assesses which countries enjoy the greatest level of peace and security. Hungary ranks prominently on this list.
The institute evaluates the countries of the world based on 23 different factors and three categories. An important factor in the ranking is the available score, which primarily depends on the state of social security and protection, as well as the development of current internal and external conflicts.
Countries participating in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict experienced the biggest decline, while North America, the Middle East (a few days before the Israeli war broke out a few days before the report was made), and North Africa saw the biggest progress. Almost 30 of the top 50 are European countries, including Hungary, which ranks 18th.
The first ten places:
- Iceland
- Denmark
- Ireland
- New Zealand
- Austria
- Singapore
- Portugal
- Slovenia
- Japan
- Switzerland
Iceland, with a population of less than 400,000, came out on top again, and since 2008 no one has been able to beat them in this ranking. Ireland showed a significant improvement in the top ranking, surpassing five countries compared to the previous year’s survey.
The global aggregate shows that scores have generally worsened since 2022, and this negative trend has continued for 15 years. At the same time, interestingly, the peace situation improved in 84 of the 163 countries examined, while it worsened in 79.
