Here is the GVH’s report on the milk market: we show which factors fuel inflation
The Economic Competition Authority (GVH) released its draft report summarizing the results of the accelerated sectoral investigation on the market of milk and milk products for social consultation. GVH experts were the first in the food markets to analyze the reasons behind the large increase in consumer prices – affecting competition law – in the milk and milk products market. Based on the findings of the analysis, the competition authority formulated six proposals.
In these, GVH experts suggest, among other things, the revision of the price formula for raw milk, offer professional assistance for future legislative considerations related to food price caps, recommend strengthening the comparability of consumer prices, suggest rethinking the pricing of plant-based beverages, and consider further official action in the field of food trade necessary. Sector players can comment on the draft report available on the GVH’s website for one month, until May 20. Within this framework, the competition authority invited the professional organizations representing sector players to a personal professional consultation on April 26, next Wednesday.
The rapid increase in food prices throughout Europe is causing difficulties for the population and all actors in economic life. Fighting inflation is therefore a common goal, and in order to protect families, the economy and market competition, the national competition authority must use all the means at its disposal.
There was a large increase in consumer prices for milk and milk products. At the same time, based on the signals received by the GVH, the supplier positions of domestic market players engaged in production and processing activities in the dairy sector showed a weakening trend. Therefore, on January 20, 2023, the competition authority launched an accelerated sectoral investigation on the market of milk and milk products, after the possibility of distortion of competition in the sector arose.
