Here is the announcement: the GVH is investigating the dairy products and egg markets as well
The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has launched accelerated sector investigations in the domestic market of milk and dairy products and eggs, announced Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the GVH, at the meeting of the Economic Committee on Tuesday. The products identified by the GVH make up a significant part of the average domestic consumer basket, and their consumer prices have seen significant increases and fluctuations in recent times. The President of the GVH underlined: “The national competition authority continues to work with all the tools at its disposal to protect Hungarian consumers from unlawful practices and excessive price increases.”
On April 15, the Hungarian Competition Authority presented its report summarizing the results and experiences of 2024 to the Economic Committee of the Parliament. Following the presentation of last year’s results, Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority, announced at the meeting that the national competition authority had launched two accelerated sector investigations into the domestic market of milk and dairy products and table eggs.
The President of the Hungarian Competition Authority explained: “In the recent period, it has been a widespread phenomenon that the prices of both dairy products and table eggs have fluctuated significantly. In addition, we have seen that the consumer prices of these products have jumped significantly recently.” Csaba Balázs Rigó added: “Dairy products and eggs make up a significant part of the average domestic consumer basket, which further enhances the justification for the investigation of price movements experienced in the recent period.”
The accelerated sector investigation is a procedure set out in the Competition Act to map market problems in cases where circumstances may indicate a distortion or restriction of competition and urgent intervention is justified in the given sector. During the investigation, the competition authority, among other things, analyses the information collected from market participants – based on mandatory responses – to identify the causes of potential distortions of competition, so that it can take appropriate steps if necessary. After the information collection is completed and the data has been analysed, the GVH summarises the results of the accelerated sector investigation in a public report. One month is available for its preparation, which can be extended twice by one month in justified cases.
