Ireland imposes sugar tax on soft drinks
As of 1 May Ireland imposed a tax on soft drinks sweetened with sugar. With this step the government intends to solve the problem of too many Irish being overweight. Two tax rates apply, for soft drinks with 5-8g added sugar 20 percent, while for those containing more than 8g sugar 30 percent. 100-percent fruit juices and dairy products are exempt from the tax.
