Internet fraudsters misuse the name of the Food Bank
Since Monday, fraudsters have been sending e-mails in the name of the Magyar Élelmiszerbank Egyesület with the aim of obtaining money from unsuspecting recipients. In the messages, durable foods from the Association’s stocks are offered at a discounted price, and after the order, a confirmation and fee request are also sent. The fraud attempt is made especially plausible by the fact that the e-mails contain several official data and the logo of the Food Bank, even though in reality the Association does not deal with food trade. That’s why the charity asks everyone to be extremely careful with suspicious messages: don’t reply to them, don’t open attachments, don’t click on links, and above all, don’t transfer money to the account number in them.
Internet fraudsters are always trying to come up with some new formula to extort money from unsuspecting Internet users. Unfortunately, it seems that the good reputation of charitable programs has been abused recently. In this case, it is precisely on behalf of one of the country’s most influential charitable organizations, the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület, that they offer long-term food stocks for purchase at a great discount and within a short period of time. Anyone who knows even a little about the work of the Food Bank knows that the Association is not a commercial organization, their mission is actually to collect perishable products and forward them free of charge to those in need. In the past 18 years, the Food Bank has already distributed 100 million kilos of saved food to those in need – in all cases completely free of charge. And it will continue to do so.
