The average premium for travel insurance policies taken out in the first two months of the summer was 716 forints, which is almost identical to the 710 forints measured in the same period last year, according to the latest data published by the insurance brokerage company Insura.hu on Tuesday.

More than half of those traveling abroad chose three countries as their destination this season: 25 percent of them vacationed in Croatia, 18 percent in Italy, while 10 percent vacationed in Austria.

Gábor Kozma, CEO of Insura.hu, highlighted from the survey results that it is clear that customers are open to travel insurance policies offering higher insurance coverage and broader protection: 22 percent chose the premium, 71 percent chose the optimal package, and only 7 percent chose the basic category.

Last year, the proportion of people taking out basic travel insurance, which also offers adequate coverage for shorter and simpler trips, was 13 percent. Partly due to the fact that the premiums have not increased at all in a year, almost half of this group can be found among the customers of the optimal service package this year.

The average daily price of basic travel insurance was 543 forints, the optimal one had to pay 656 forints, but customers could also use the services of premium products for less than a thousand forints, for an average daily fee of 971 forints.

Of the three main destination countries, the proportion of travelers to Croatia decreased by 2 percentage points compared to last summer to 25 percent, while the proportion of travelers to Italy (18 percent) and Austria (10 percent) increased by 3 and 4 percentage points, respectively. In addition, Greece (7 percent), Slovenia (5 percent), Romania (4 percent) and Spain (4 percent) are among the most popular travel destinations this year. The average length of summer trips is 7.1 days, and the most common (more than a fifth of all insurance policies) is insurance for eight days, which fits the 8-day/7-night scheme typical of week-long tours.
