Free travel insurance in the EU

The health care availability in another Member States for EU citizens is an important element of European unity. Health care entitlement in the whole union, and even beyond was established by the spirit of the whole union.

If tourists are staying in an EEA Member States (EU-27 countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), one can get the same medical care as the country's citizens. On the basis of domestic health insurance, National Health Insurance Fund pays all of the benefits that the EU Member States’ citizens insurer pays. Those benefits which the member shall pay, are not free for Hungarian citizens either. To use the benefits one shall take out the European Health Insurance Card at the Regional Health Insurance Funds or by post. The card is available free of charge. The condicion of the application, that the claimant is entitled to health services in Hungary and has a permanent address in Hungary or in other EEA Member States.
