Hypermarket growth expected to continue across India
The expansion of hypermarkets across India is likely to continue unabated, according to a new study, which said about 315 new such outlets could open in Tier I and Tier II cities by 2011.
According to the Namnews website, the study said that as of 2008, up to 212 towns had sufficient market potential to support profit-making hypermarkets. Assocham said that it sees the opening of five or more hypermarkets per city as feasible in 2009, given the continued growth of household income in India. It added that this number is expected to grow further by 2011, as some Tier III towns would by then also have the market potential to support hypermarkets – reports foodinternational.net.
