On the occasion of the 14th anniversary of its establishment, the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) presents the most significant food chain safety events and results of the past year in a comprehensive publication. The summary describes Nébih’s work in a complex form: from official inspections and laboratory tests to the most significant plant and animal health tasks and awareness-raising programs. Strengthening stable food chain safety and food quality will continue to be a priority goal in the future.

With the establishment of Nébih on March 15, 2012, our country made the internationally progressive decision to manage the food chain and its supervision in all its complexity, “from the farm to the table”. The past year was also a busy period in the system serving food chain actors and consumers together, with emerging challenges requiring a coordinated response from experts working at Nébih, as well as in districts and government offices. The newly published annual summary faithfully reflects the complexity of the food chain, for which proper professional coordination is essential.

Although the publication focuses only on the most important events and results, it is suitable for providing a comprehensive picture of the Hungarian food chain. Last year, several challenges had to be faced in the areas of animal health and plant health. Foot-and-mouth disease reappeared after 50 years and for the first time, peste de petits ruminants appeared. Avian influenza and African swine fever required serious attention, while the epidemiological situation of rabies remained stable, although increased preparedness was still justified in the eastern part of the country. In plant health, the spread of grapevine golden yellow disease has increased, so a special state control program has been launched, with particular attention to the action against the American grapevine cicada and the application of modern detection methods. During the seasonal food inspections, experts conducted more than 1,000 inspections nationwide, primarily on products related to holidays and seasonal consumption habits. Although some hygiene and labeling deficiencies were revealed, overall positive experiences were made. The central unit of Nébih, which focuses on detecting fraud and counterfeiting, conducted more than 300 inspections nationwide, during which more than 213 tons of products were withdrawn from circulation. In its role of sharing knowledge and shaping attitudes, the office presented the High Quality Food trademark, which is the only national quality system, in a national media campaign. The Quality-Driven Public Catering Program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2025, an effective aid in raising the standard of public catering.

Nébih’s goal is to ensure that all stages of the food chain operate safely and transparently. The office prioritizes the prevention and rapid suppression of dangerous animal and plant diseases, the prompt identification and withdrawal of problematic products from circulation, and the provision of up-to-date information and awareness-raising to consumers. It will continue to work along these core values in the future, “from farm to fork.”
