This way the autumn fruit stays fresh for a long time
In the autumn season, we come across an abundance of different fruits on store shelves, but it is not always easy to determine which fruit is ripe and ready to eat. Experts quoted by The Guardian give practical advice on how to choose ripe fruit, especially among the varieties popular during the autumn period.
Apple: Color and sound are the key
In the case of apples, color and sound are also useful clues. According to experts, the color of the fruit’s skin is one of the most important indicators of ripeness, but tapping can also help: if the apple makes a crunching sound, it is likely to be properly ripe and crunchy.
Avocado: Color and pressure
In the case of avocados, it is worth checking the color of the part under the stem, as well as examining the hardness of the fruit by applying careful pressure. A slightly soft avocado is ready to eat, but it should not be pressed in too much, as this indicates overripeness.
Banana: Peel and color
In the case of bananas, the yellow color and shiny skin indicate ripeness. Although the green bananas are not yet ripe, they can be further ripened at home, so it is worth watching how their color changes.
Other fruits: Fragrance and skin condition
In the case of cherries, pineapples, lemons and other fruits, the smell and the condition of the peel can also be important signs. For example, a pineapple gives off a sweet scent when ripe, while the elasticity of a lemon’s rind can indicate freshness.
