Instead of seasonal workers, “pick it yourself” days dominate the fruit market
The plum season is starting, and producers can pay up to HUF 200 a kilo if the buyer picks it from the tree. “Pick it yourself” days are becoming more and more popular, which is also good for the producer, since he has to deal with seasonal workers less.
In July, fruit and vegetables were 15.4 percent more expensive than a year earlier. However, the level of producer prices remained low, which is why “pick-your-own” promotions are becoming more and more popular, writes Agroinform.
Agroinform conducted a survey on self-service fruit shopping in recent weeks. This showed that most people pick apricots (47 percent), but apples (40 percent), strawberries, and cherries are also popular (37 percent to 37 percent). Peaches were mentioned by 33 percent and cherries by 28 percent.
It’s no wonder that apricots are the most popular: they can be picked for HUF 500-600 per kilogram, just like cherries. A kilo of strawberries costs around HUF 900-1000. The plum season is starting now, here you can expect a unit price of HUF 200-400. It is also possible to harvest figs, but they charge a price for this: HUF 2,000-2,500 per kilogram. Two-thirds of the respondents estimated that they saved at least 25 percent compared to if they had bought the fruit at the market or in a store.
