The melon season started earlier this year
This year, we can enjoy high-quality cantaloupes and cantaloupes two weeks earlier than usual, thanks to the development of cultivation technology and the expansion of the variety selection, said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy in a video published on social media.

The head of the ministry reminded that the export of watermelons has increased significantly in recent years. Domestic consumption is also high, in the case of watermelon 10-12 kg/person, while in the case of cantaloupe 1.5-2.2 kg/person per year. He added that in 2024, 1,198 producers will deal with watermelons and 269 producers will produce melons, growing watermelons on a total of 3,665 hectares and cantaloupes on 436 hectares, the area of which has significantly expanded compared to last year. This season, 160,000-180,000 tons of watermelons are expected to be harvested, which is also due to the favorable weather conditions, the minister explained. István Nagy emphasized that the melons did not suffer frost damage this year, which is why the cultivation conditions are favorable. Melon particularly likes the current sunny, warm weather. Thus, all the conditions are in place for high-quality Hungarian melons to be available in stores. Regarding the export of watermelons, the head of the ministry said that last year, in 2023, it increased by 100%, to 47,000 tons, and by 85% in value compared to the previous year. The goal is to further increase exports, for which there are still opportunities. Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland are among the target countries, as due to our geographical location we can deliver to these countries much cheaper and with lower transport costs, explained the minister. István Nagy emphasized that the Hungarian melon is not only delicious, but also healthy, full of vitamins and minerals that contribute to the hydration of the body and the preservation of health. Hungarian melons owe their special flavor to the local climatic conditions, which result in a harmonious sugar-acid ratio. Buying local products is not only beneficial from an economic point of view, but also from an environmental point of view, as it minimizes transport distances and environmental impact. In his video, the head of the ministry encourages everyone to look for domestic melons at vendors and stores, thereby
