Easter long weekend: this is how store opening hours will be in 2025
Easter this year will bring significant changes to the opening hours of major Hungarian retail chains. Most stores will be closed for three consecutive days, so planning ahead is essential. While Saturday, April 19 will be the last opportunity for Easter shopping, stores will remain closed on Good Friday (April 18), Easter Sunday (April 20) and Easter Monday (April 21).
Major supermarkets will close on these days
Leading Hungarian supermarket chains – Lidl, Spar, Tesco, CBA, Penny Market, Auchan, and Aldi – have all confirmed that their stores will remain closed on the following public holidays:
-
April 18 (Good Friday)
-
April 20 (Easter Sunday)
-
April 21 (Easter Monday)
On Saturday, April 19, stores will be open according to their usual Saturday hours, though opening times may vary by location.
Where can you still shop during the holidays?
There are a few exceptions. Some SPAR locations will remain open during the Easter holidays, particularly those attached to petrol stations, such as:
-
OMV–SPAR express stores
-
Orlen–Despar shops
-
Selected SPAR partner and SPAR market locations
-
The City SPAR supermarket at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport
As for Auchan, petrol stations and automated terminals will stay open throughout the holiday, except on April 21, when all Auchan kiosks will also be closed.
Privately owned corner shops, 24/7 minimarkets, and tobacco stores may stay open at the owner’s discretion – so it’s best to check directly with your local shop.
Normal hours resume on Tuesday
From Tuesday, April 22, all major chains will return to regular business hours, so anything forgotten can be purchased then without issue.
And how much are we spending?
According to a recent survey by the National Trade Association and major supermarket chains, three-quarters of shoppers plan to spend no more than HUF 35,000–40,000 (approx. €90–100) on Easter gifts, food, drinks, and decorations combined. Traditional items like ham, eggs, horseradish, sweets, and baked goods remain high on shopping lists during this period.
